Can I use black bags for my garbage? No, you must use clear non-coloured bags for your garbage. Can I have a privacy bag? Yes, residents are allowed one privacy bag no larger than 20" by 22" per clear garbage bag. Can I use clear non-coloured kitchen catchers for my garbage? Yes, clear non-coloured kitchen catchers can be placed inside of a clear non-coloured garbage bag. Can I use blue bags for my recyclables? Yes, you can use clear non-coloured or transparent blue bags for recycling. Can plastic bags be used in the green cart? No, only compostable or paper bags are permitted in the green cart.  You can also use newspaper and box board (i.e. cereal and cracker boxes) Where can I get a new compost bucket for in my kitchen? Mini kitchen bins are sold at many retailers.  Residents can also use items like ice cream buckets and empty kitty litter containers. Who do I call if my garbage, recycling, or compost is not picked up? Please call 902-667-5141 and we can assist you to determine why your waste was not collected. What happens if I don’t participate in the program? All garbage, recyclables and compost must be properly source separated and placed in the proper bag or in your green cart. Failure to do so will result in the material being rejected and it will not be collected. Is there any place I can bring my sorted garbage, recycling, or compost? Yes, to the Cumberland Central Landfill in Little Forks.  Hours are Monday to Friday 7 am to 3 pm and on Saturday from 8 am to 12 pm for residential drop off only.  Tipping fees apply. No, black bags are not accepted at the Cumberland Central Landfill as of January 1, 2012.  Where do empty paint and aerosol cans go? Empty paint and aerosol cans are recyclable and should be placed in your recycling bag.   Why do I need to remove the caps from my bottles? When caps are left on bottles and then driven over by heavy equipment, or compressed in the baler, they basically become projectiles that can cause serious injury to staff at the facility. What can I do with my old television? Select electronics can be returned to an Electronics Products Recycling Association (EPRA) drop off center- free of charge.  Visit the Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA) site.
